George Velmachos: Boston Marathon’s Life-Saving Greek Doctor

Dr. George Velmachos became known worldwide as the head of doctors who successfully treated the victims of the bomb attack at the Boston Marathon last April. The great Greek scientist is also the doctor of 16-year-old Myrto, who was sexually assaulted last summer on Paros.

Dr Velmachos is a Harvard professor and an expert in dealing with serious injuries. He has undertaken to restore the health of the young girl from Paros.

A year after the attack, the unfortunate girl is trying to win the battle of life after suffering severe brain injury.

The hospital has many Greek doctors and nurses working. They said, “We see Myrto as a member of our family, we have to do everything.” In their attempt doctors use the most modern technology combined with latest treatments.

Dr. Velmachos was born in Athens. His father is from Kalamata and his mother from Crete. He studied Medicine at the University of Athens. Then he went to South Africa and specialized in injuries. He continued his education and expertise in Los Angeles and since 2004 he has been located in Boston, at Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital.

In Boston he had the opportunity to make 250 Internet posts, write four books, participate in 40 medical textbooks, while he is a member in 20 organizations of the medical world.
